 Yes!
  Pressure at the carb inlet should be 1.5 to 3 lbs max. Anything more can
force the needle off the seat causing the carb to flood (run rich).  
  Either re-install the SU pump; get an aftermarket pump with a 3lbs max
delivery; or install a pressure regulator (Expensive!). Any one of the above
should solve the problem.
