Clearance isn't the most important thing when you start changing tyres.
The most important thing, IMHO, is not to change the suspension's
"instant centre".  You do this if you go to either a higher, or lower
profile tyre.  When you change the "ic", you lose the MG's delightful
light handling, and road feel/responsiveness.

Nope, just the MINIMUM size tyre that would handle the weight/stress.
The GT weighs more than the roadster, so it received a larger tyre.

BMC/Leyland didn't spend anything more than they absolutely had to;
remember that at this time, there was a management power struggle going
on between Triumph, and MG divisions.  The MG division lost...
