In my opinion, it's easier to leave that to the pros and just buy a new
pair. The amount of time you save by not doing it yourself will outweigh
the cost. New shocks don't cost that much. 
The same goes for brake masters and clutch masters. I tried to rebuild a
clutch master once and had nothing but headaches, not to mention a leaky
master cylinder. I broke down and paid about $70.00 for a new one and
bolted it on. It is working fine. Much better than if I had done it myself!
