If we're going for the vote here, I'll put my hand up for hypoid 90.
I've been rebuilding these things for longer than I care to remember and if
they went wrong due to using the wrong oil, then it would cost me!
The fact is, as proved by the responses that you've had, it really isn't that
critical. Go for something different like Penrite 40. Unless you live
somewhere continually very hot or very cold. A gearbox is absolutely nothing
like an engine. In terms of engineering tolerances they are dinosaurs.

Awhile back I emailed to everybody the question of what oil to use in
my Midgets tranmissions (a '72&'78).
I got many emails with as many answers. Some people use regular old
90weight Hypoid, some say only non-hypoid. Some said some hypoid brands
are ok but others not. Some said 20w50 engine oil, some said the same
but add STP additive to it. Some said synthetic is the best.
So this means I can use any oil I want to, right?
Or, is there hope for a difinitive answer?
