Hi Rick,
  I have heard that when 1 of the alternator diodes goes away, it causes 
a previously absent dull glowing in the dash light.
  The remaining 2 diodes allow charging to continue at a lesser rate.
  Eventually, one of the remaining diodes packs it in.
  You then run a total loss (no charging) electrical system until the 
battery is spent.
