Mark,

I know what you mean about smoking those rear brakes. I once smoked the rear
brakes too but it gave me a headache so I stopped.

Are you sure the pistons are backed off all the way - if it is not the shoes
will be slightly expanded and make for a tight fit. You can try opening the
bleeder screw and getting the pistons to back off (compress) as much as
possible.

Hope this helps.

Don't get me wrong, the Midget is the second best thing to be under.
But, I got another problem that I just don't understand. I just came in
from the garage having spent the best part of the morning replacing the
rear brakes on the Midget. I got the shoes at a local parts store and
they look correct. The problem is that it looks like the lining is too
thick and they rub, drag, hell they won't turn. I drove the car around
the block and they are "smokin"! I have backed the adjusters all the
way out and adjusted the hand brake cable so it is sloppy. I followed
the manual, BL and Haynes, all looks fine until the drum goes back on.
It has to be pounded on, with my hand only, so it's not all that tight.
The new shoes don't look to be much thicker than the old ones may have
been when new, how's that for logic? I'm beginning to sound like my
wife!

Most of you know that I am renewing my old love affair with this Midget
(this is number 3 but 1 and 2 were a long time ago). I have put brakes
on other cars, no big deal. I have at least average intelligence and
got real dirty doing this simple job. Yes, it's still fun but I want to
go driving for a change.

The question is there anything that I could have done to cause this
anomaly or did I just get a fat set of stinking shoes?? They do have a
life time warranty, do you think that they do this on purpose so they
will last? :)
