Then there was the story of a friend of mine who knew of an acquaintance that
drove straight into a tree on the way to college one fall back in the 70s.
Unfortunately, it was a lethal meeting. As passed on by an eyewitness, right
after the crash, "Highway Star" could be heard blaring from the car.

I was wondering that, myself. Must have been one hell of a stereo to
drown out the blast of a train whistle.
As far as playing on after the accident... I friend of mine once told
me about a time that he and two of his friends were blasting down a
country road (at about 2:30 in the morning) in a Porsche 944. The
driver lost control of the car and it ended up, upside-down straddling a
ditch. The front was resting on one side and the back on the other,
(whale tail obliterated), roof in the middle, unharmed.
He said that one of his most vivid memories was laying in the ditch,
watching the dust settle and hearing "Communication Breakdown" still
blaring from the stereo.
