Yo chaps! The Endurance Run around Lake Michigan held in conjunction with
the UML Summer Party in Grand Rapids, MI drew the participation of 2 Midgets,
1 MGA, 1 MGC and 11 MGBs.
Solo competition was won by Don Anderson (Woodridge,IL) in his 1972 MGB.
Team Competition was won by Team Fokowie who entered two MGs (1975 - Jai
Deagan of Eaton Rapids,MI and Rick Verhey of Grand Rapids,MI --- 1978 - Rick
Ingram of St.Joseph,IL and Drew Hastings of Wallaceburg, Ontario, Canada) and
bested the team entry of the Chicagoland MGb Club.
There were no "fatal" breakdowns..the only know failure was that of the fuel
pump of the MGA, which repaired roadside. One Midget was stuck in a sand dune
for 3 hours. One MGB purchased an entire set of tires DURING the run. Team
Fokowie spent about an hour in the woods "circumnavigating" fallen trees and
other barriers in an effort to "press on regardless".
There is talk of creating a "Triple Crown" of endurance runs next year - the
"Misery Endurance Challenge" out of St.Louis, the "Abingdon Classic" out of
Chicago, and the "MG Grand Lake Tour" in conjunction with the UML party.
