I'm assuming you've already checked the brake lines for leaks?

If you had a lot of dry-rotted rubber, the same may be true of the
brakes.  Buy the required repair kits and start rebuilding.  I would
start with the rear wheel cylinders and the front calipers.  You can
stop there and see if that solves your problem, but it would be
preferable to replace the rubber in the master cylinder too.  I did all
this on my car and it made a world of difference.  IMHO, it's best to do
it all now (you will need to eventually anyway) and don't try to cut
corners with brakes - your life is at stake.
