Make sure you check the solenoid before deciding it's the pump.  The
solenoid can be accessed from the outside of the tranny (engine and
tranny in place) whereas the pump cannot.

Ooops!!!  You right and I forgot to mention this - good catch.

Take the square cover off of the solenoid.  Remove it and the solenoid
itself.  Once you have it out you can check it.  Hook the wire of the
solenoid to a positive lead, then the body of the solenoid to negative. 
The plunger inside should hold it's position with power applied.
