Hello, everyone.

Thanks to all for their responses to the great brake fluid replacement
debacle. I took the A out last week and it still has a little air in the
lines. Since the season is about over and I plan to replace the rear flex
hose next Spring, I will leave it as is for now. The car is driveable the
pedal is just a little soft.

Speaking of drives, this time of year I am very careful about using the A.
I try to avoid short trips since, given the unpredictability of fall
Minnesota weather, any drive could be the last of the season and it is a
good idea to get the car good and hot to get rid of any moisture in the oil
on that last drive. I was about an hour last week and I would love to
describe all of the beautiful fall foliage but unfortunately it was dark
out and the leave are past peak. It was about 35 out and the top was up (I
mention this because it seems to bother some people ;-) I went to the gas
station to fill up (I also keep the tank full this time of year in case of
forced storage) and the attendant asked is the red car was mine. After an
affirmative reply, he stated that someone he new owned a Datsun just like
mine :-o

The Mobil 1 15W50 in the transmission seems to be a big improvement over
the other oils that I tried this summer. When I bought the car, it had
very thick oil in the tranny. The synchros did not work that well and it
was sluggish to shift. I changed to 30W engine oil and it shifted much
better but it was very loud. I then tried Amzoil light gear oil. Shifting
was butter smooth and the tranny was quiet but the synchros were non
existent. The Mobil 1 15W50 gives a slightly stiff lever (although it was
cold out) with fairly good synchro action and reasonable noise levels. It
is the best compromise so far. If I replace the clutch this Spring, I will
probably rebuild the tranny as well but for now, I am happy with the way it
works. The nice thing with the Mobil 1 is that it is reasonably priced and
available anywhere.
