Nobody caught the double registration?? Computerized or not, that's weird.

You're too good to the jerk! Offer him a choice: come get it or don't come
get it. Seems like it's not really your problem to get the car back to him.
He's the one who technically "stole" the car. Let him worry about it.

All in all you came out pretty well. At least you got your "seed money"
back. And, no kidding, maybe the incarceree would like some cash "for the
rusted hulk" so he can buy smokes. 

Is he on death row? He may not need the car anymore anyway.
