You know what really works for me? (Well, "workED" since I normally don't
do anything to afford me the opportunity to meet anybody's 'finest'
anymore...) When an officer would pronounce my last name correctly. 

Almost nobody does that... My natural reaction was "Who do you know in my
family?" They'd reply... "Uh.... nobody. Why?" Then I'd start the story
about nobody getting it right, and I'd usually just get a warning. :-) No
leg required...

When I was growing up I was a good kid. Never got in trouble for anything.
(Raised properly? Probably...) BUT... I came close to losing my driver's
license twice before I was 19. Speeding! Natch. Then one minor accident. I
got cured REAL quick!
