I can't speak to the subject of baby oil, but a friend of mine regularly
applies petroleum jelly to the padded dash on the '78 Suburban he bought
new and it looks pretty darned good for a 20 year old vehicle.  He also
applies it to the weatherstripping, trim, and vinyl surfaces (including
the seats), as well as packing it around all the body mounts, and
suspension bushings.

All the stuff he treats are in good shape.  I put a set of shocks on for
him the other day and was amazed at the condition of the body mounts: 
they look almost new.
