A huge thank you to all the posts coming into my laundry list of queries.

Rotor/distributor position answers understood. It's in right. I knew the
rotor was - just had a question about the distributor, but that's
understood now.

Timing light - I'll have to reread the instructions armed with the list
help. I don't have a light that fits over the number one wire while
attached. I have three leads with one alligator clip lead (to the number
one spark plug) and two clamps going to each terminal on the battery. The
number one wire is still off the car. Based on what I thought I heard the
list say, I think this is my problem. Should attach the light lead and the
spark plug lead to the plug.

Vacuum advance - will see if I can move the base plate by hand. Also, I
did notice that there was play in it's movement. It wiggles back and forth
about 1/4" or so without moving the advance/retard knob. Is this a sign of
a bad diaphram as someone suggested?

Torquing of the u-bolt nuts. Ok, I think I've got a handle on this. I'll
snug 'em just a bit more and check them obsessively until I know they are
not loosening. :)

Unisyn - I'll play some more. Could be poor quality tool as someone
suggested or could be I don't have all the openings set right - i.e., maybe
I have some blockage at the tube. The little float does move when I tip
the tool up and down. To answer one query, yes I have the padded aperture
on the Unisyn.

Black spotting on my hand - I think what several people said about moisture
mixing with soot is right on. It was very, very thin; more like water than
oil. I'll stop worrying about that one.

Again, thanks to all for the kind replies. I'll play some more and post
any conclusions. Man, the people on this list are the best!
