The following is cut and pasted from the Massachusetts RMV web site, thought it
might be of interest to some of you:

Massachusetts requires all motor vehicles to be inspected
each year for safety. These inspections are performed by
licensed inspection stations throughout the state. The
inspection fee for all vehicles is $15, payable directly to
the
inspection station. If you would like information on
                  motorcycle inspections, CLICK HERE.

Gasoline powered vehicles under 8501 lbs. Gross Vehicle
Weight (GVW) are required to undergo an emissions test,
currently administered at the same time as the safety
inspection. Vehicles 15 model years old and older are
currently exempt from emissions testing. NOTE: excess
visible smoke emitted from the exhaust pipe is considered a
safety related failure, applicable to all vehicles regardless
of
                  age.

For all types of motor vehicles, including trucks, buses and
commercial vehicles, the following items will be checked
during your annual inspection. If you pass, a color-coded
sticker will be placed on the lower right hand side of your
windshield. The Certificate of Inspection or sticker is valid
for 12 months from the time of issue, or until transfer of
                  ownership of the vehicle.
