When you look down inside the overdrive unit, there are two sets of splines.
You have to use a long screwdriver and push the lower set counterclockwise
until they line up absolutely perfectly with the upper set. Putting the
gearbox in gear helps, as does standing it butt-upwards on two pieces of 2 x
4 so that you offer the overdrive straight downwards. To make the pump drive
clear the cam, make sure the cam's smallest side faces where the pump roller
will be.

You can also use some safety wire to pull the pump back against its spring,
wrapping the wire around two studs to hold it tight. It's fairly easy to
snip the wire and remove it (be sure you get all of it!) once the overdrive
has dropped all the way down.
