A quick test is to take the connector from the spade conncetor on the engine
block (right hand side on the front end just under the rockercover) and
temporarerly hold this to ground.
The gauge should go quickly to maximum.
If this is the case, the sender will probably be faulty.
I've seen this more with other B's as well.
The spade connector is revited to the actual sender.
This does not always make the good contact.
Try to tap the rivet tighter with a hammer and some nail or something like
that.
If this test gives no move in the instrument, there maybe a loose connection
in the dash.
Check the voltages a the gauge and compare this with other gauges, if the
voltage from the voltage regulator comes through...
