Paul is right, in that the manual says a "stretcher" is needed to widen the
aperture. But (and Charley Robins, forgive me for saying this!) the manual
isn't always right...............

I've been replacing the differential shims in Salisbury rear axles once
every couple of months (not the same car, please note!) and I've never yet
had to use a stretcher. Once the bolts that hold the diff. unit in place are
undone (and here a 1/2" drive air wrench really helps!) the unit invariably
comes out with no difficulty.

The biggest problem Matt will likely face is pulling the axles out of the
housing. We use a slide hammer with an old axle nut welded on the end to fit
to the axle. Without this, it can be a bit difficult to extract the axle and
bearing.
