Listers,
I posted a few weeks ago about my car running fine and then I let it
sit for a couple of weeks because of bad weather. When I went to
start it, it would crank, but would not turn over. It is getting gas,
but no spark. I replaced the plugs, coil, plug wires (including king
wire), rotor, disti cap, and checked all of the wiring probably 100
times. Most of these should have been replaced anyway. The rotor
does rotate when I crank, the coil is getting voltage with the
ignition switch on.

I'm to the point where I think I should replace the electronic
ignition module. It has a Pirana module that looks in pretty bad
shape. The plastic case comes apart easily and it looks like the PO
used some silicon or something to get it to stay together.

Questions:

1) Am I doing the right thing or should I check something else before
spending 100 bucks on a new one.

2) Can I, or should I, get another Pirana unit (it's worked for 3
years) or should I get the Crane unit that Moss advertises? Is there
another recommended brand. I can't find the Pirana one anywhere.

3) One thing I have not checked is the ballast resistor...because I
can't find it!!! I know that some models use a length of resistive
wire for the ballast, but I'm having problems locating this as well.
I'm not sure how to check if the ballast is open or shorted or
what...since I can't find it. Am I missing something here?

4) One of my manuals says pull the king wire from the disti cap, hold
it 1/4" from the block, crank and look for a spark. The other manual
says do not do this on a car with electronic ignition...so, I didn't
do it although I don't understand this at all. Can I??? This would
at least reassure me that the coil is delivering voltage and current
on the HT side.

Anyway, I'm feeling kind of frustrated. I've not posted about this in
a while as I thought I owed it to the list to try all suggestions by
those that responded (thanks Eric and others) earlier. I've also read
everything in my Haynes and Chilton manuals. I just don't know what
to do next. Please advise if I am about to make a 100 dollar mistake.

Sorry so long, I just thought I should give as many details as possible.

Regards,
Tom
77B(perhaps still mad at me for letting her sit for 2 weeks)
