Brent,

Make sure the battery connections are clean and TIGHT (!) then slather them
up really well with vaseline.  Completely cover all four terminals with the
vaseline and work it into all the little crevases.  Should fix your problem.

Regarding the points; are you sure you're running the right coil?  Sounds to
me like maybe your running a coil that should have a ballast resistor
without one. Ergo much higher running current on the coil and therefore
higher than designed current at the points.  Just a shot in the dark.....
