Larry,
 I'm not structrual engineer, but from what it looks like, the battery
boxes are no more than mere appendeges to the body.
 I've got a '78 in the shop now, and with that car there is of course
only one battery box. There don't seem to be any additional stiffining
added in that area when the factory took their Sawzall to it.
 The only  "structrual" function the battery box MAY have is to replace a
bit of the stiffness where they cut the hole in the body for that
battery.
