1. you could carve a chunk of styrafoam to "fill out" the shape of the 
tunnel and support the carpet in its current shape, or...
2. you could carefully slit your carpet and create overlapping flaps that 
would allow you to pull it tight over the complex shape of the tunnel. 
Then you have to have some way to fasten the flaps down. I drilled the 
tunnel for snaps. My tunnel carpet had to be "customized" since I 
installed the 4-sync OD tranny in a Mk. 1 roadster. With a little 
judicious extra padding I managed to get it quite tidy. The entire tunnel 
carpet is fastened with snaps (the ring type, as in the floor carpet) so 
I can mess with the shifter, etc, without tearing up glued-down carpet 
(as I had to do the first time). 

I can't describe precisely how the flaps should be cut (and of course, it 
varies). Think of the back of an envelope or the bottom of a brown paper 
bag.
