I agree with the fuel starvation theory, I have had su pumps do this in the
past.  Also check for bad or dirty connections at the pump.  With a Weber I
don't believe that you would have to add a fuel pressure regulator when
adding an aftermarket pump, none of my weber buddies seem to have one. YMMV
