Well sort of......  There are two types of octane ratings Research and Motor. 
 One of these is much higher than the other. (I used to know which was 
larger, but I forgot many years ago)  The Octane rating used on the pumps in 
the US is the average of these two ratings.  I suspect that Aussie gas is not 
averaged.
Here in California the pumps used to carry a decal that said 
R+M
------
  2             to denote that the ocatane rating was the average.
