Carl,
Just have your machine shop magnaflux the rods for cracks and check their
alignment and big-end size. If they are OK, no need to replace them. A set
of new bolts would be a wise precaution, though.
As for balancing, always a good idea! Do the pistons, rods, crank, flywheel,
new clutch pressure plate and harmonic balancer. Our local machine shop
charges $120 for this service so it's a relatively inexpensive procedure
with definite results in smoothness of the finished engine.
