The service eventually came fully back up almost an hour later.  They
are claiming network congestion (everyone calling everyone else to wish
them a happy new year).  I use the Vodaphone network in Australia... a
mate in Sydney ICQ'd me to say the network was down there... so it was a
national outage.

The worst thing was that our systems (I work for an ISP) send out
monitoring messages (SMS) to our phones if something goes wrong - great
when you can't contact your fellow techs - all on mobile - and you have
no idea if your systems are falling apart!  The only comfort being that
'Net access was still happening so I could remotely monitor things that
way.

oooops, this is an MG list isn't it... hmmmm, nup, I can't think of any
sensible way to include any MG content in this :-)
