If you are sure that the exhaust system is not leaking then my guess would be
that, at speed or high rpm, there is an oil leak that is getting onto the hot
exhaust system and smoking.  You didn't say what color the smoke was but if it
was a gray/blue is is likely engine oil if the smoke is coming from the front.
I'm not familiar w/ A's but I'd check the valve cover gasket and the oil
pressure gauge line first.

I'd carry a fire extinguisher (1/2 grin) w/ you until you discover and remedy
the source.  Oil can ignite-it takes a lot to get it going- but it will burn!
