It's a combination of exhaust temperature above the ignition point of the
fuel, and fresh air being injected into the exhaust ports by the belt
driven air pump. This is, by the way, exactly what the air pump is
intended to do, burn off any excess hydrocarbons before they get out of the
tail pipe into the atmosphere. Unfortunately (as you have noticed) the
overly rich fuel mixture is hazardous to your LBC.
