Hi, All.

Thanks for the replies you sent about the absence of handy,
mixture-indicating lead deposits.
I took Rex ('72 BGT) out today. With bright sunshine from behind, I could
see oil smoke at every gearchange and even on the over run. I think I know
where the black colour is coming from :-(
Compressions are...
Hot/Dry: 180/125/138/180
Hot/Wet: 200/195/190/200

Looks to me like a bore wear * and* sloppy valve guides. Nevertheless, the
engine is still smooth and powerful so I'll live with it (and about 100
miles to the pint of oil) until funds permit a rebuild. Funnily enough,
there's plenty of oil pressure (60 psi @ 2,500 rpm) although the needle does
bounce at tickover.
