What year GT is yours?
I swapped the covers between both of my '73 GT's
and all I had to do was remove the acorn nut, pop the cover,
install the new one, and put the acorn nut back on.

Jack

I did the replacement of the covers. Yes, I had to take it all apart. I did
so completely to clean it up. But as I saw it there was no way to do it
without relieving the spring. I used a vise to hold it to get it apart and
back together. It really wasn't that bad.
