I put on a standard replacement AL head in Jan. Works great. I have an 18GD.
I took it in and had heli-coils installed in the maniford stud holes, spark
plug holes, and the rocker arm assembly holes. I also hard them verify that it
was flat. It was not. They milled it flat. I put it on using the standard
non-copper gasket and have had no leaks so far (still less than 500 miles on
the new head.)

I went with the standard for the same reasons you mentioned. The head cost $699
assembled (NW Import) the additional work was under $100 to prep it, and I was
up and running again. Since then I bought a parts car with a weber and
performance header so I am glad I didn't go with the cross flow. I am sure
others have gone with the cross flow and been just as happy. I didn't really
want to mess with re-running the throttle, choke and then having my spark plugs
covered. All of that would have meant spending an extra $200-400 on just the
head not to mention a new manifold.

Now I am not sure how to pull the engine, but I will figure that out when I go
to put the OD in.
