I would suggest aluminum instead of steel for the shroud. Won't rust, 
lighter, easy to work with. Since all it has to do structurally is hold 
itself up, don't go any thicker than necessary. Even 1/16th would 
probably be heavier than you absolutely need. If you have to you could 
fold over and double up external edges for additional stiffness. If it 
held up in cardboard all this time, it should be easy to match its 
sturdiness in aluminum.
