Yup, coils do often fail in that mode, crap when hot and better when cooled
down.  It won't last long though, maybe a hundred miles more and it gets
much worse, and soon it won't run at all.  Time for a new coil.  OTOH, a
bad condenser can also cause similar symptoms.
