Bob,

I had a similar problem with very high oil consumption in my '74 GT several
years ago; the engine never made smoke, and also never leaked a drop on the
driveway. I replaced my engine with one that had been professionally rebuilt.
During a lull in restoration activities, I tore down the old engine and was able
to confirm that the problem was worn, stuck and totally "crapped up" piston
rings. I was combusting my engine oil at the rate of about 1 quart/500 miles. I
think the rule of thumb is "if you see smoke, the problem is in the valve
guides, but where there is no smoke, the fault lies in the rings".
