76B Lives! (mostly)

It was a great weekend! I purchase 2 trashed and beat
up 76 B's ( both with OD)about 6 months ago. With 4
lbc's at home (none running) and a 73 at my dad's
house in Las Vegas, I had little use for two more cars
even at $500 for the pair. But hell for $500 I had to
look, didn't I? Well they followed me back to dad's.
OK, so I pushed them back! Been driving from the San
Fran Bay area to Las Vegas monthly or so to visit and
work on cars. Armed with a ZS carb out of my junk box
I got one running. She had good compression but ran
rough, plugs fouling with oil. Pulled the plugs from
car #2. Wow! Nice and tan, clean. Check the oil, clean!
Next trip pulled both engines. This trip, armed with a
freshly rebuilt carb, junk box su fuel pump of dubious
origin and new clutch I swapped engines. This motor
couldn't wait to fire! I think the motor turned over
twice before catching with a vrrroom! Alittle tweaking
and I was off driving the back roads avoiding the
local authorities. What a fun!!

My goal is to get the car California smog ready. Lots
of work left, as both cars sat topless to the elements
for the last 3 years. Rain wasn't much of a factor but
the sun pretty much trashed the interior. Not one fuse
will hold so looks like a little electrical trouble
shooting is in order. ...And paint, yeah, bright red I
think!

My junk box fuel pump and the after market pump on
board are not making the grade. The su pump clicks but
does not deliver the volume and the engine rpm
fluctuates with pump operation on the after market
pump. Does the ZS carb operate with the same 3 1/2 psi
that SU carbs operate at? The engine steadily
backfires at gear change and engine decel. This
improves somewhat with timing advanced from 10 to 15
degrees but I need to stay fairly close in order to
pass Ca. smog. I'm currently running a 45DE dizzy
without vaccum advance. Would my problem lessen with a
25D and vaccum advance unit? The butterfly valve on
the carb has been soldered closed.

Suggestions or comments are cordially accepted!
