My case was a bit more subtle and (fortunately) less expensive. I had a
NEW car serviced regularly, at least twice yearly, at the same Jiffy Lube.
When it was less than 5 years old one tie rod end fell apart three days
after the last lube job, with the ball end completely worn out and with the
(orignial) grease fitting missing. Of course the check list from every
visit to Jiffy Lube listed the number of grease fittings serviced
(including the missing one) and was always checked off that the tie rod
ends were in good condition, including three days before it fell apart.
These days I don't drink (much), I don't use dope, and I don't do Jiffy
Lube. You don't always have to service your own car, but it's nice to know
enough about it to check on the other guy's work.
