to body nuts. Mine were in a sorry state and I didn't think the original
design offered enough support for all that weight and leverage. I
discovered that the long nuts used as part of the 1/4-light window to frame
assembly are the same thread and size, and offer about three-times the
thread length for the screws to bite into. The screws are plenty long
enough, they stick through the existing nuts a long way. I removed the
original welded in muts (well most of them had come adrift anyway) then
constructed a triangular plate out of 1/4" thick flat bar, drilled and filed
three hex holes in the appropriate positions for the three long nuts and
welded them into place. Then drilled and tapped the centre of the plate to
accept a small countersunk screw which is used to hold the plate, with nuts,
onto the back of the body panel. When the three screws are fully tightened
the clamping force of the hood frame and triangular plate on the body panel
is more than enough to stop it moving about, although you do have to
carefully support the hood frame until you get them fully tightened. A
further refinement, and added support, would be to weld the plate to the
back of the body panel.
