steering rack gaiters

I need to replace the rubber gaiters on my steering rack (LHD).
My question is do I really have to un-taper the track rod ends from the
front wheels or can I just loosen up the locknut and unscrew the track
rods until they are clear of the track rod ends so the new gaiters can
be slid in? When unscrewing the left track rod the steering wheel will
be turned all the way to the right and vice versa. Will this work?
