Interesting isn't it that these engines can be in such bad shape
internally and still run well? My '69 B puffed blue smoke ONCE on a the
way to a club outing last winter. After a 200 mile round trip, during
which the engine ran well, it was a quart-and-a-half low on oil. When I
tore it down I found broken rings and copper showing through a couple of
the rod and main bearings. Since the spark plugs were a dry tan, I had
to figure the missing oil was thrown out due to blowby, not burned up.
This may be a characteristic of these engines. I don't know for sure,
not having worn too many of them out.
Turned out that I had an engine that was assembled from the spare
parts bins. Pre air-injection head, two rods stamped "3" and they were
in 1 and 4, lots of other little things like that. ;^) Then, I made it
more of a hodgepodge (sp?). Since the 18GH block was scored in the #4
hole, I rebuilt the engine on an 18V block. Parts is parts, eh?
