It depends what you call a "proper mask".
With an air fed mask you can paint anything.
There are filter-masks that SOME people use to paint
hardened paints, and that are actually spec'ed as such.
However, most manufacturers don't recommend it, most
stores will not stock or sell them, and I beleive in some
areas they are actually not legal for that purpose.
