I'm beginning to think that I may have gotten a bad batch of intake valves.
I treated it to a whole new set of valves about a year ago, and since then
it has broken the keeper end off the valve stem of three different intake
valves, which I have never had happen in the 30 years before that. One
more to go? Part of me wants to chuck out that 4th valve before it breaks,
and another part of me wants to leave it in there out of curiosity just to
see if it will break.

One more thought. I'm using an "18" head, so there are some other options.
I'm thinking of changing all of the valves and cotters and spring caps to
parts for the GG-GK engine, which used the later type cotters and still had
double springs. On the later type valves the keeper groove is smaller and
round (no sharp corners), and I think a little less deep, so the stem
should be stronger in that area. I have (in the past) used a head in this
configuration for years without such incident, but I don't know it that
proves anything. Anyone have any notable experience or opinion in this area?
