I've always had run-on with my 73 MGB, but it got much worse, as did pinking
on hills, when I started using standard unleaded (95 UK) with Castrol valve
seat protection additive with octane booster that takes it up to
(supposedly) 98. Retarding the ignition stopped the pinking but did nothing
for the run-on. I bought an MGOC valve that just dumps air into the
manifold - just made the engine idle faster (if I trigger the valve with the
ignition still on) and did nothing for the run-on. I've since adapted it to
be more like the North American MGB system which uses manifold vacuum to
suck the fuel out of the jets with some success. Paradoxically if I rev the
engine before switching off it works perfectly, but switching it off from
idle still gets a little run-on.
