Wow, too technical for me.
I vote for simple heat expansion forcing a bit out the overflow pipe.
Check under the car when you stop and see if you can see where it is
coming from (or at least check for a drip/moisture at the end of the overflow).
The expansion tank idea is a good one (why throw-away good coolant when
you can recycle it).
