Folks,

Just rescued an early M Type MG from the bottom of an orchard in Braintree,
Essex last weekend. The engine had been stored in a water tank, and the
engine number (MGA 273) is clearly visible, but the chassis has fared less
well, and the number stamped into the front dumbiron is not readable - even
after wire brushing.

The MMM Register has identified the engine as having originally been fitted
to chassis 2M0543, but this is claimed by an M Type in Vancouver! The
owner of the Braintree car had two M Types (both purchased over 40 years
ago - three pounds for the pair!) and sold the other one about 10 years
ago. We suspect that the remaining chassis is actually the chassis from
that other car - i.e. the engines have been swapped at some point - hence
the need to discover the chassis number of this car.

I believe that forensic labs have the ability to perform some sort of
magnetic resonance technique on engine blocks, where thieves have filed
engine numbers off, thereby being able to read the stamped number 'hidden'
under the surface of the metal. Would it be possible to have someone do
such a test on this dumbiron? Unfortunately, all attempts to discern the
car's identity by other means have come to naught so far.

Also rescued from the same orchard at the weekend was a very rare 1930
Morris Minor Semi-sports - so quite a good weekend all round!

Thanks in advance,

Ian Grace <gracei@lucy.si.com>
