My guess: lean mix due to fuel starvation, caused by restricted fuel
flow.

Disconnect the fuel hose from the carb and stick the end in an empty
jar, then power the fuel pump and watch the flow. I'm guessing it
will be less than full flow. If so, might be the pump, a pinched
metal fuel line or clogged fuel filter.

My reasoning: enough fuel flows for idle, keeping float chamber
full, but when you cane it, there's not enough fuel flow to keep the
float chamber full, so it eventually leans out and then finally
kills the engine.
