I have had this problem also. It usually occurs at low idle with the turn
signals flashing. I traced mind to an underperforming alternator and an
undercharged battery. Once I put a new battery and alternator in it stopped
and has never come back. I have no idea why this made a difference but it

Subject: tach and hesitation
I know I have seen this thread before but I never really paid too much
attention to it. Oh how I miss those archives :(
Why would my tach drop to zero and bounce around when cold or idling? Would
this also be related to hesitation and near stalling on take off in 1st?

Classic (!) symptom of an intermittent connection in the ignition LT
circuit, a break in this circuit will affect both running and the tach.
Check the connections in the white - tach - white - coil - white/black -
distributor circuit, paying particular attention to the flexible wires
inside the distributor. When accelerating in any gear the change in vacuum
causes the points plate to twist, which flexes these wires, and eventually
they can break either at the terminations or inside the insulation.
