Steve,
   Once the engine starts and the ammeter goes to 10A, how long does it
stay there?  It's OK to put out 10A for a while, but as the battery is
recharged the rate of charge should diminish. Once the battery is fully
charged, you can expect the ammeter to show 1.5-2.5 (more or less) with
engine running at 2000 rpm, no lights, brakes, radio, etc turned on.
  At idle, you might expect to see a slight discharge, say 1-2 A, and a
flick when the fuel pump pumps. The red lamp would also be on.
  Have you done the regulator tests described in workshop manual?
