Pull the valve cover.
Turn the engine the right way and watch the valve train.
Count the valves from the front (fan blade back) for convenience.
(There better be 8! :)
SNIP

you gauge should slide through without binding,
but without slop.

You should be good to go. (I learned from the factory manual and the
Haynes manual. I doubt that I have told you anything that you can't
find in there.)

I still have the problem, here what I have done, and some more testing
 - I have adjusted the valves. Thanks Andrew ! 2-3 of them were i bit
'tight. I may now have them a bit too open, also the ones I did not
touch. I have never done it before, so I think I get the not binding,
but I havent got the feel the other way
 - Adjusted the spark plugs, they were i bit too wide.
 - adjusted the gap point in the distributor, the gap was too small:
 - Changed front brake pads :)

Here is (are) my problem(s)
 - Going downhill, using the engine as a brake ( no foot on the
pedal), pops an loud bangs from the exhaust
 - It starts to misfire at around 3500-4000 RPM, the problem, i can
feel the car hesitates then revs on, hesitates etc.
If I rev it standing still, no problem.
 - There is a hill on the highway close to where I live, going up, it
started to misfire/hesitate at lower RPM.

The misfire/hesitation is a bit difficult to explain in english, it's
like the ignition misses a 'few beats'

Any ideas ?
New spark plugs? Point/capacitor/rotor in the ? New leads?
Remembet it just had a rolling road setup, he adjusted the weber and
the distributor
I am going on vacation on tuesday, probably with my other M-car :(
