[Lew Palmer] ...for a while... I've never had any long-term luck with
the buzz-box fuel pumps.

[Lew Palmer] Replace with the original. An SU pump, properly maintained
will last nearly indefinitely. Their worst enemies are non-use and lack
of cleaning. With non-use the diaphragm will harden (just like tires).
This makes the action stiff. Lack of periodic (every 30,000 miles or so)
cleaning of the points will eventually make the points non-operable.

Chances are one of these two items caused both pumps to pack it up. Get
a pump rebuild kit and do the maintenance required (including internal
cleaning). That way, the pump will operate correctly, it will be
original, you won't have to cut into the fuel lines, the pump will shut
off when appropriate and not continue to buzz incessantly, and the
volume and pressure of the fuel will be correct.

Also make sure that there isn't an external reason for the failure like
blocked fuel line or filter. Sometimes these buzz-box pumps will put out
too much pressure and overcome minor blockages.

Lew Palmer
